I started using Photoshop way back in verison 1.5. It didn't even have channels then! Once channels came around and we could save an alpha into a channel we could save logos and make them keyable in our graphics station. Well there is a new method that is pretty slick and doesn't require you to save the selection into a channel. Simply have all the layers visible that you want to save with alpha, and be sure any background is off. Select Save For Web and choose the PNG 24 selection for filetype. Save and name your file. Now, when you bring it into photoshop it will key with transparency intact.
I was so used to making a selection from my layers and saving it into the Alpha channel and then saving out a PICT with alpha that I didn't realize this great little shortcut that does not require anything to be pre loaded into the alpha channel. This PNG method also takes any layer styles like drop shadows along with your graphic.
Very sweet little tip....thanks to Dale Doebert who pointed this out to me the other day.
