If you are a full fledged, card carrying audio pro, do not read this post. It is intended for us lowly editors out here who need a quick and easy way to level out all our voice tracks because their levels are all over the place. A soft spoken school teacher, a big burly construction dude, and a guy who ends his sentences in a whisper, but blasts out certain syllables.
The "easier than one click" solution? Simply....Levelator.
Cut your interviews. Export the file into an Aiff audio file from the timeline. Open Levelator and drag the clip to the Levelator window. That's it. No...really. That's it.
Is it perfect? Well, nearly in my opinion. Audiophiles might besmirch it's true capabilities but in our tests this program is the bomb!

In our first installment of Freebies I have to kick it off with my all time favorite...MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5. How did they do it? All this functionality, settings for days, batch processing, presets, Mac and Windows, exhaustive format support...whew!
This is a must have utility for video file conversion,DVD ripping (legal only) and all around video converter. It won't replace your favorite encoding app, but it is a tool you will soon wonder how you got by without it.

I started using Photoshop way back in verison 1.5. It didn't even have channels then! Once channels came around and we could save an alpha into a channel we could save logos and make them keyable in our graphics station. Well there is a new method that is pretty slick and doesn't require you to save the selection into a channel. Simply have all the layers visible that you want to save with alpha, and be sure any background is off. Select Save For Web and choose the PNG 24 selection for filetype. Save and name your file. Now, when you bring it into photoshop it will key with transparency intact.
I was so used to making a selection from my layers and saving it into the Alpha channel and then saving out a PICT with alpha that I didn't realize this great little shortcut that does not require anything to be pre loaded into the alpha channel. This PNG method also takes any layer styles like drop shadows along with your graphic.
Very sweet little tip....thanks to Dale Doebert who pointed this out to me the other day.

Tilt Media was recently featured in the Wisconsin State Journal 77 Square section featuring TV show promos we do for BBC Sales Company, American Public Television and others. We have a whole section of Promos on the Tilt Web site, but if you haven't yet read the article, take a look. It does a pretty good job explaining what the difference is between a promo, and episodic and a long lead.

I could not possibly express it any better than Orson Wells so suffice it to say I agree with him wholeheartedly. It is the last stop, it is musical, it is an art. And that"s exactly what we do.
Amen to that.
